The Safe Communities Foundation
The Safe Communities Foundation, which launched on April 23, 1996, is a unique partnership between the private and public sectors and is dedicated to making Canada the safest country in the world. The focus is to create safe environments where all residents can live, learn, work and play. By taking both a grassroots approach as well as working at a national level, this foundation is YOUR voice advocating that a safe community is a basic human right.
The Foundation was the vision of Paul Kells, Safe Communities Founder and former Vice Chair. Paul lost his son, Sean, at the age of 19 as a result of injuries he sustained in a workplace explosion. Sean did not receive any Health & Safety training. He was not told that the chemical he was handling was hazardous and flammable. The workplace was in violation of Health and Safety regulations at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels of government. Sean’s family knew that his death was preventable.
Paul Kells envisioned a world where no family need ever experience the pain and suffering of such a loss. Working with a concept developed by the World Health Organization, he created the Safe Communities Foundation.
